Stream Watch
The Duke Forest and Friends of New Hope Creek invite you to participate in a citizen science effort to monitor water quality. New Hope Creek provides outstanding aquatic habitat for rare mussels and flows into an important drinking water supply, Jordan Lake. The sampling site is under the Turkey Farm Road Bridge, which is approximately .75 miles south from the turn off of Mt. Sinai Road. Parking is available in the Johnston Mill Preserve lot just past the bridge on the right. Sampling equipment will be provided, and volunteers will help perform water tests and learn about water quality, indicator species, watersheds, and natural resource management.
This event typically occurs the first Sunday of every month either at 8am or 9am depending on the season. For specific month to month details, please visit our Facebook page or contact dukeforest@duke.edu.
To participate, you must provide your contact information to dukeforest@duke.edu so that you may be notified of last minute changes.
Stream Watch is affiliated with the Division of Water Resources of the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources (DENR).
Spring Flora and Fauna Tour
Friday, April 26th, 1 – 4pm, Duke Forest Maintenance Shop
Our popular flora and fauna tour led by Jeff Pippen is back again this year. Our location is T.B.D. but wherever we end up, we’ll talk about the birds, bugs, plants, mammals, and anything else interesting we come across. We will depart in vans from the Duke Forest Maintenance Shop promptly at 1pm and return by 4pm. As always, sturdy walking shoes, water, and perhaps a walking stick are recommended, as well as bug spray, sunscreen, and anything else that makes you feel safe and protected in the woods! Directions to the shop can be found here.
Participation will be capped at 20 and registration is first-come, first-served.
