2012 Annual Gathering

Over 75 attendees participated in the Duke Forest’s 2012 Annual Gathering on November 15th. Members of the University, as well as Durham and Orange County community members were in attendance to hear about current teaching, research, and forest management activities on the Duke Forest. This year’s theme was ‘Fire in the Forest’, and two great presenters talked about the historical and ecological role of fire and the present day risk and reward of using fire as a management tool.

Attendees also enjoyed a display from local artist, Jennifer Miller, and photos from the winners of the first ever Duke Forest photography contest. We were also treated to a very special reading by Riverdave Owen of his poem “Brother Fire”, which he wrote specifically for this event. The Duke Forest awarded the Carolina Godiva Track Club with the Clarence Korstian Award for exemplary support of the Duke Forest for everything they do to help put on the Pine Cone Pacer.

Great food, wine, and discussion were enjoyed by all! Duke Forest Staff would like to thank everyone for their participation and interest in the Duke Forest.
