During the academic year, student assistants enrolled in graduate school at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment work with Forest staff members on a variety of projects related to the general maintenance and improvement of the Forest. Such activities include:
- Road and fire trail maintenance
- Forest management projects
- Inventorying and marking timber in preparation for its sale
- Gate and sign improvement
- Boundary line location and marking
- Organizing forest records
- GPS data collection
- GIS data entry
